Monday 31st December – New Year’s Eve at Work
I had to work 12:30-00:30 today. As it was the busiest night of the year, everyone was scheduled a long shift and we were each given specific roles. I really wasn’t looking forward to it; I don’t like New Year’s Eve for various reasons plus I knew that Matt was on his own at the hotel and I was sad we couldn’t be together to see in the new year.
That being said, work wasn’t as bad as I expected. It was nice that I was with my Disney family and everyone was in high spirits. I knew it was going to be busy but I didn’t expect it to be as crazy as it was. It certainly made the hours go by quicker. At 7pm (midnight in the UK) everyone gathered in the middle of the UK Pavilion and sang Auld Lang Syne. I couldn’t join in as I was manning one of the doors of the pub! It was nice to hear though.
For the last couple of hours of my shift, I was on the beer cart handing people the drinks they’d ordered. I noticed a guy with a menu in front of his face and called out, “hi sir, can I see your receipt please?” because I thought it was a bit strange. I then jumped because the guy lowered the menu and it was Matt! It took me completely by surprise and I couldn’t speak for a moment… he had paid for a day’s entry into the park (which isn’t cheap!) for the last couple of hours of the night. I couldn’t believe it- we got to see in the New Year together after all.
At 11:40pm, the countdown to midnight started. It was the usual IllumiNations fireworks followed by a special New Year spectacular. Our manager let us drop our positions to watch it which was so kind… everyone was watching the show anyway and it meant we got to celebrate with everyone else! Each country in the World Showcase had their own individual fireworks to demonstrate that it was already 2019 in those countries which was really special, then we had the countdown to midnight for the USA. I have never ever seen such spectacular fireworks; Disney obviously do the best fireworks in the world but on New Year’s Eve it’s something else. I just watched with my mouth open as I felt the ground shaking from the noise!
Once the fireworks and celebrating had finished, my shift was over! I walked back to Cast Services to get changed and they were giving out veggie chilli and hats to all the Cast Members. Matt and I walked around Boardwalk and stopped for some food on the way to the car. Like I said, I’m not a fan of New Year but this one was pretty special.
Tuesday 1st January – New Year’s Day in Magic Kingdom
I can’t think of a better way to spend the first day of a new year! We had a really relaxed morning as we’d had a late night last night, adorned our matching t-shirts and headed back to Magic Kingdom in the afternoon. It was a really good time to go as there were no lines through security or transport.
We did a few rides but the main focus was to take photos. I want to get some printed properly so we spent a lot of time making sure we got some really good ones. I’ve wanted to have the Tangled lantern photo for so long as well so we did that too. Here are some of my favourites…
It was then time to watch Happily Ever After, which I had been looking forward to for ages! I’ve only seen it a couple of times and I was so excited for Matt to see it for the first time. Again, I’d dreamed of watching Disney fireworks with Matt for so long. It was one of my highlights of his visit.
After I’d stopped crying (it takes a while, trust me), we did some more rides. Cue random photos (I’m grumpy on Buzz Lightyear because I’m rubbish):
I then wanted to spend some of the money my Dad gave me for Christmas and I knew exactly what I wanted! We went to Pandora on Main Street and they do park exclusive pieces which are beautiful and you can’t get them anywhere else. I got the castle bangle, the Partners statue and Epcot ball charm. I love them but I’m scared to wear them just yet as they are so special! I thought they would be such a lovely memento of my year here.
By the time we’d finished in Pandora, the park was basically empty. It was on my bucket list to stay in the park till after close to get some great pictures of the castle with no one in the background… luckily poor Matt obliged and we got some great shots! Here’s a selection…
We were literally the last few people to leave the park. Such a magical day to start off 2019!
Wednesday 2nd January – Animal Kingdom
We were out so late last night and up early for park open today… a grand total of 5 hours sleep was not enough to get me through this day!
We did most of the rides and watched the Festival of the Lion King. I honestly struggled to keep my eyes open. We then met the main couple themselves and stopped for some sugary snacks in the hope of waking ourselves up a bit. I may or may not have consumed an entire bag of cotton candy…
We then had a dance to the band that plays in the Harambe Marketplace area and that definitely woke us up. We saw the Rivers of Light show for the first time which was good then we managed to get a Fastpass for one of the Avatar rides, Na’vi River Journey. Despite our trying multiple times, we couldn’t get a Fastpass for Flight of Passage but Matt is coming back in the summer so I don’t feel too sad about that. It was really cool to experience Pandora at night, though, and now I’ve seen the film it all made a lot more sense!
We were struggling to keep ourselves upright so we left the park early and went to Olive Garden for dinner. I’d never been before but it is now my favourite place to eat. With any entrée you get unlimited soup or salad AND the most incredible breadsticks that have ever roamed this Earth. I’m still dreaming about them now.
Thursday 3rd January – A Day of Rest
We definitely slept well and didn’t wake up until 11am today! This certainly made up for the little sleep we’d had and all the walking we’ve been doing. We stayed in the hotel and relaxed by the pool as it was another really hot day. I ate a mince pie while sunbathing which was weird.
I called my Mum as it was her birthday, Matt went to get Dominos and we had a film night in. Definitely needed!
Friday 4th January – Matt’s Last Day
I woke up dreading today as Matt was going home. I’ve been so lucky to have him here for 2 whole weeks but I knew it would go quickly. We packed up our things, left the hotel and stopped at McDonald’s for breakfast (a sad and weird way to bookend Matt’s visit). We spent the day playing the two Disney miniature golf courses- Winter Summerland and Fantasia Gardens. I had such nostalgia throughout the first one as I remember playing here with my family years and years ago!
Matt needed to leave for the airport at 6pm so we had a last dinner together at Perkins. I love it there because their bakery is amazing. Matt dropped me back at my apartment and then it was time for him to go. It was so much harder than I expected, we both cried a lot and he kept coming back for more cuddles because he couldn’t walk away. I’m so lucky he’s coming back again in the summer but it’s hard knowing it’s such a long time before I will see him again.
It was honestly the best 2 weeks and Christmas I could have asked for and I’m so grateful he spent a lot of money and effort to come here. See ya real soon Matt!
Saturday 5th & Sunday 6th January – Back to Normality
Going back to work was pretty difficult, though it was nice to be back with my friends. Every little thing reminded me of things Matt and I did when he was here. It was so quiet as the Christmas holidays were over so I finished work a couple of hours early on both days which allowed me to get my laundry done, go to Walmart and take the Christmas decorations down which is always a sad task. Normal life resumes!
Although I’ve included lots of photos already, Matt made a compilation of loads more photos and videos from his trip. Please have a watch, it’s really cute 🙂
